ASTM A178 CALDERA TUBE
ASTM A178 boiler tubes are electrically welded tubes with minimal wall thickness made of carbon steel pipes and carbon-manganese steel tubes. The ASTM A178 standard is used in boiler tubes, boiler ducts, overheating ducts and safe ends. Tubes must be Grades A (low carbon steel), C (low carbon steel) or D (carbon-manganese steel). All tubes will undergo heat treatment after welding, followed by cooling. Steel shall conform to the established compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon. Grades C and D must meet the given tensile requirements, i.e. tensile strength, elastic limit, and elongation. The material shall also be flattened, flanged, tensioned, reverse flattened and hydrostatic (or non-destructive) electrical tests. The crush test will also be performed if requested by the buyer. Minimum elongation values will be given. Mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubes less than 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) internal diameter or 0.015 in. (0.4 mm) thick.

heat treatment
After welding, the ASTM A178 boiler wort must be heat treated at a temperature of 1650OF (900oC) or higher and then cooled in the air or cooling chamber of a controlled atmosphere furnace. Cold-stretched tubes will be heat-treated after the final cold-stretching tubes after the final cold-stretching pass at a temperature of 1200 F (650 C) or higher.
