Copper Sheets in Printed Circuit Manufacturing

Apr 06, 2023

The PCB is an insulating board covered with a layer of copper, which is used to connect electronic components. Copper sheet metal is a crucial component in PCB manufacturing as it is the conductive material used to create the electrical circuits on the surface of the board.

Copper sheet is produced through a rolling process, in which copper is rolled into sheets of different thicknesses. These sheets are used in the manufacturing of PCBs using a process known as photolithography. In this process, a photographic mask is used to transfer the electrical circuit pattern to the surface of the PCB. The pattern is etched into the copper sheet using acid, leaving a copper pattern on the board that matches the circuit design.

Copper sheet used in PCB manufacturing is classified into two categories: electrolytic copper sheet and re-rolled copper sheet. Electrolytic copper sheet is produced through an electrodeposition process, in which a copper sulfate solution is used to deposit a layer of copper on a substrate. Re-rolled copper sheet is produced from copper scrap, which is melted and rolled into sheets of different thicknesses.

Electrolytic copper sheet is most commonly used in PCB manufacturing as it is more uniform and has better surface quality than re-rolled copper sheet. However, rerolled copper sheet is often used in high frequency applications as it has a lower insertion loss and lower dielectric constant than electrolytic copper sheet.

In short, copper sheet is a crucial component in PCB manufacturing as it is the conductive material used to create the electrical circuits on the surface of the board. Electrolytic copper sheet is most commonly used in PCB manufacturing due to its uniformity and surface quality, but rerolled copper sheet also has important applications in high frequency applications. PCB manufacturing is a complex process that requires a combination of design, engineering and manufacturing skills to produce high-quality printed circuit boards.
