As it has appeared previously, stainless steel 304 is the most common austenitic steel. Its nickel content usually ranges between 8 and 10.5% of its weight and its chromium content is usually between 18 and 20% of its weight. These are high proportions that give stainless steel 304 a high resistance to corrosion. In addition, it also contains important alloying elements such as manganese, silicon and carbon, just like inox 316. The rest of the chemical composition is basically iron.

Chemical Composition:
| C max | Mn max | If max | Cr | Nor | P max | S | Pb | V | W | Mo max | Cu | Cb-Ta | |
| 304 | 0.08 | 2.00 | 1.00 | 18.00 / 20.00 | 8.00 / 10.50 | 0.04 | 0.03 | ||||||
| 304L | 0.03 | 2.00 | 1.00 | 18.00 / 20.00 | 8.00 / 12.00 | 0.04 | 0.03 |
There are many types and grades of steels, among them the most suitable for use in corrosive environments are austenitics. And within this typology the two most common series of stainless steel are the 200 and the 300. The difference between these two series is the structure; while in the 200 series manganese and nitrogen are more present, in the 300 series nickel is the main stabilizing element.
