    GENERAL

    Gnee D6 steel is a cold working steel with a high fraction of carbides and high hardness after heat treatment. These characteristics make this steel a high wear resistance superior to the Gnee D2. However, this steel is more fragile than Gnee D2 steel.

    Supply conditions – Supplied in annealed state with a maximum hardness of 250 HB.

    APPLICATIONS

    Its high hardness makes it particularly suitable for severe wear applications, such as cold forming and cutting operations of sliding surfaces and ceramic molds. It is used in cutting tools such as knives, dies, punches, scissors. In reamers, baboons, drawing dies, calibers, etc.

    HEAT TREATMENT

    Stress relief: In tools of complex shapes, with the removal of heterogeneous material in roughing, sudden change of sections, etc., before hardening in tempering the stress relief treatment should be performed to minimize dimensional variations. Treatment should be done at a temperature of 550 ° C for at least 1 hour per 25 mm. Then cool in oven to at least 200 ° C and then calm air.

    Tempering: When heating during austenization to perform preheating to ensure temperature uniformity and minimize distortion. Preheat to a temperature of 550 ° C Austenize temperature between 950 – 970 ° C. Heat for 1 hour for every 25 mm thickness and add an additional 1 hour for every 25 mm. Preferably pre-heated cooling oil to around 70°C with stirring. It can also be cooled in resting air.


    Tempering: It should be done immediately after tempering when the temperature reaches about 70 ° C. The tempering temperature must be selected according to the specified hardness. As this steel has no secondary hardening, tempering should be around 200 ° C, but never below 180 ° C. For this use as a guide below the tempering curve. Maintain the tempering temperature for at least 1 hour for every 25 mm thickness and use at least twice as much tempering. The use of a minimum time of 2 hours and is maintained at a minimum of two tempered.

    Nitriding: Steel can be nitrided to increase the wear resistance of surface hardening. However, the nitriding process must be controlled so as not to significantly decrease the hardness of the tool body. Nitriding this steel can not lead to the formation of the layer of black, because it weakens the nitrided surface. The maximum hardness after nitriding is in the range of 900 – 1000HV, depending on the initial hardness after processing.


    EDM and grinding: Gnee D6 steel is susceptible to the appearance of cracks after these processes. When performed outside the box, EDM and grinding can cause surface tempering, deterioration of heat treatment in the region and lead to the formation of cracks. In extreme cases it can cause the loss of the tool from cracks and fractures. If it is necessary to perform a new tempering after finishing tool.
