    GENERAL

Gnee D2 steel is a cold working tool steel most frequently used in the metal and mechanical industry, particularly in the cold. Pruning industry forming and cutting is thermally treated at high hardness maintaining good fracture resistance. It is a steel with high hardness of penetration hardness and excellent dimensional stability and shape. It is able to combine two different heat treatment cycles, allowing for the subsequent use of surface treatments such as nitriding and PVD coating. Due to its structure, hard carbides containing chromium and a high hardness after heat treatment, GGD D2 steel has excellent abrasive wear resistance as well as adhesive.

Supply conditions – Supplied in annealed state with a maximum hardness of 255 HB.

    APPLICATIONS

Gnee D2 tool steel is used dies and punches conformation and cutting. Tools for folding, a fountain, extrusion, threads combs and rolling knives in general. In the manufacture of molds for the formation of ceramic parts and molds for plastic injection of high technical abrasiveness.

    HEAT TREATMENT

Stress relief: In tools of complex shapes, the removal of heterogeneous material in roughing, sudden changes in sections, etc., stress relief treatment should be carried out to minimize dimensional and shape variations during tempering and tempering. Treatment should be between 550 to 650 ° C for at least 2 hours. Cool slowly in the oven to 300 ° C and then calm air.

Temper: austenize temperature between 1020-1040ºC. Heat for 1 hour for every 25 mm thickness and add an additional 1 hour for every 25 mm. Cold air, hot oil, salt bath or nitrogen pressure in a vacuum furnace. During austenization heating perform two preheating to ensure temperature uniformity and minimize distortion.

Tempering: It should be done immediately after tempering when the temperature reaches about 70ºC According to the GGD D2 tempered steel curve two temperature ranges can be selected, 200 and 540ºC for a typical hardness of 58-60 HRC. The selection of heat treatment cycles should take into account the characteristics of each application tool, but tempering at high temperature always leads to increased fracture resistance. In any case, at least two of tempering should be done. In critical wear applications it can be used with hardness greater than 60 HRC. When the material is subsequently nitrided or PVD coated, tempering is performed at high temperature.

Sub-zero treatment: In certain situations, tools can be subjected to this treatment to ensure maximum dimensional stability. Cooling should be carried out in temperatures close to – 90 ° C. Most often it is used for tools that are coated with PVD. Sub-zero treatment can lead to the generation of cracks and must be carried out with full technical control.

Nitriding: Steel can be nitrided to increase the wear resistance of surface hardening. In the case of steel Gnee D2 nitriding can not lead to the formation of the white layer by weakening the nitrided surface. The maximum hardness after nitriding is the order 1200HV.

EDM and grinding: Gnee D2 steel is susceptible to the appearance of cracks after these processes. When performed outside the box, EDM and grinding can cause surface tempering, deterioration of heat treatment in the region and lead to the formation of cracks. In extreme cases it can cause loss of the tool. If it is necessary to perform a new tempering after finishing tool.
