The Alloy 317L Butt Weld Fittings layer is too thin to be visible, and the metal remains lustrous and smooth. The layer is waterproof and airproof, protecting the metal underneath, and this layer is quickly reformed when the surface is scratched. When Alloy 317 pipe connections force each other, the oxide layer can be scraped, allowing parts to weld together. When forced by force, the welded material can break and sting, a destructive effect known as grating. In comparison, 317L stainless steel butt welding accessories contain enough chromium to undergo passivation, forming an inert film of chromium oxide on the surface.
