Description
ASTM A178 boiler tubes are electrical resistance welded tubes with a minimum wall thickness made of carbon steel tubes and carbon-manganese steel tubes. ASTM A178 standard is used in boiler tubes, boiler lines, superheater lines, and safe ends. Tubes must be Grade A (low carbon steel), C (low carbon steel), or D (carbon-manganese steel). All tubes will undergo heat treatment after welding, followed by cooling. The steel will conform to the established compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon. Grades C and D must meet the given tensile requirements, i.e., tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The material will also undergo flattening, flange, tension, reverse flattening, and hydrostatic (or non-destructive electrical) testing. The crush test will also be performed if requested by the buyer. Minimum elongation values will be given. The mechanical property requirements do not apply to pipe less than 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) inside diameter or 0.015 in. (0.4 mm) thick.

Heat treatment
After welding, ASTM A178 Boiler Tube must be heat treated to a temperature of 1650 ° F (900 ° C) or higher and then cooled in air or in the cooling chamber of a controlled atmosphere furnace. The cold drawn tubes will be heat treated after the final cold draw tubes after the final cold draw pass at a temperature of 1200 ° F (650 ° C) or higher.
