What is ASTM A240 310S Stainless Steel Plate?
ASTM A240 310S stainless steel plate is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel designed for extreme high-temperature service, featuring 25% chromium and 20% nickel. It offers excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, particularly in sulfur-rich, high-temperature environments (up to 1,150°C). 310S is the low-carbon version of 310, reducing brittleness and sensitization.
In high-temperature industrial applications, such as heat treatment furnace linings, kiln components, and specialized chemical reactors-material
selection often determines the success or failure of operations, as well as the risk of catastrophic equipment failure.
Although ASTM A240 310S (UNS S31008) serves as the industry standard for environments reaching up to 1100°C, not all 310S steel plates possess equivalent quality. Many operators face two intractable challenges: rapid oxidation and scaling, and unexpected embrittlement (specifically Sigma phase embrittlement) that leads to cracking during thermal cycling.
Our ASTM A240 310S stainless steel plate is specifically designed for high-temperature and highly oxidizing environments. As a high-chromium, high-nickel austenitic stainless steel (Cr 24–26%, Ni 19–22%, C ≤0.08%), 310S offers excellent oxidation resistance, with a maximum continuous service temperature of approximately 1100°C and up to 1150°C under intermittent conditions. This effectively prevents oxidation scale spalling at elevated temperatures. In addition, through optimized chemical composition and controlled heat treatment processes, we minimize the risk of sigma phase precipitation, preventing embrittlement during long-term exposure in the 600–900°C range and ensuring structural stability.

In terms of surface quality, we utilize precision rolling and leveling processes to achieve excellent flatness (typically ≤3 mm/m) and a uniform surface condition, free from delamination, cracks, or inclusions, fully meeting the requirements of high-end equipment manufacturing. Regarding weldability, by strictly controlling the carbon content (C ≤0.08%), we reduce the risk of sensitization in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). ER310 filler metal is recommended for welding to ensure reliable joint performance and corrosion resistance.

Last year, a major chemical enterprise contacted GNEE after the internal plating within one of their reactors began to warp and oxidize just four months into operation.
Following a technical analysis, GNEE identified that the previously used material suffered from an uneven grain structure and insufficient nickel content. In response, we supplied custom-cut ASTM A240 310S plates that had undergone precision leveling and specialized edge treatment.

Results: The reactor has now been in continuous operation for over 18 months, with no instances of deformation or surface scaling occurring during this period. By opting for metallurgically superior materials, the client successfully reduced maintenance-related downtime by 70%.
The GNEE Group is a leading global provider of high-performance alloy supply chain services. Specializing in heat-resistant stainless steels and superalloys, we offer not merely raw materials, but also reliable technical assurance. All of our 310S products are accompanied by a comprehensive MTC (Mill Test Certificate) traceable to the EN 10204 3.1 standard, and are fully open to inspection by third-party agencies such as SGS, BV, or TUV.
