Silicon steel and its application
As one of the most important soft magnetic materials used today, silicon steel has a wide range of applications, ranging from small relays or pulse transformers to multi-ton generators, motors and transformers. As demand for power generation continues to grow, better grades of steel need to be developed to reduce energy waste in electrical equipment and minimize the physical size of the increasingly powerful equipment now needed. The first soft magnetic material was iron, which contained many impurities. Little by little it has been discovered that silicon is a material that can increase resistivity, reduce hysteresis losses, increase magnetic permeability and almost eliminate aging. Silicon steel is widely used in various electrical and electronic equipment due to its unique properties, such as silicon steel in transformers, motors and inductors. Large quantities of directional steel are used, mainly in power and distribution transformers. However, it does not replace non-oriented silicon steel, which is widely used where low-cost, low-loss materials are needed, particularly in rotating equipment.
