What grade of stainless steel is 1.4057?
1.4057 stainless steel is a martensitic grade, also known as AISI 431, Alloy 431, UNS S43100, and SS 2321. It features high tensile strength, excellent torsional strength, and good impact toughness; it is commonly used for drive shafts and propeller shafts, pump and valve components, piston rods, and high-strength fasteners. Regarding heat treatment, it is typically supplied in the quenched and tempered (QT) condition-commonly QT800 or QT900.

How is the corrosion resistance of 1.4057 stainless steel?
Among all martensitic stainless steels (400 series), 1.4057 offers some of the best corrosion resistance. It withstands corrosion from fresh water, marine atmospheres, and certain chemicals (such as weak acids and oxidizing acids). However, its corrosion resistance remains inferior to that of austenitic stainless steels (like 304 or 316L), and it is not recommended for use in extremely acidic or high-chloride environments.
Can 1.4057 stainless steel be welded?
Its weldability is relatively poor. Due to its high carbon content and tendency to harden, it is highly susceptible to cold cracking during welding. If welding is necessary, preheating to 200°C–300°C is required, and post-weld annealing must be performed immediately to relieve stress. It is generally recommended to use welding consumables that match the base metal or austenitic consumables (such as 308L or 309L, though the latter may reduce weld strength).
Is 1.4057 magnetic?
Yes. 1.4057 has a martensitic structure and exhibits strong ferromagnetism (it is attracted to magnets) in both annealed and heat-treated states.
What is the difference between 1.4057 and 1.4021 (AISI 420)?
1.4057 contains 1.5–2.5% nickel, whereas 1.4021 contains almost no nickel. Thanks to its higher chromium and nickel content, 1.4057 offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 1.4021. The addition of nickel also gives 1.4057 superior low-temperature impact toughness compared to 1.4021.
