stainless steel 1.4401 yield strength

Nov 23, 2025

What material is equivalent to 1.4401?
316 stainless steel is a really common stainless steel grade and it is one of the most widely used stainless steel grade around the world. This grade is written as 1.4401 or X5CrNiMo17-12-2 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S31600 according to UNS norm.

Is 1.4401 the same as 316?

Yes, 1.4401 is the European designation for stainless steel grade 316. These names refer to the same material, which is an austenitic stainless steel valued for its excellent corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 316 stainless steel exhibits good corrosion resistance in natural environments (PREN value 23.1 to 28.5). However, this material is not resistant to seawater corrosion and intergranular corrosion. AISI 316/1.4401 stainless steel has a tensile strength of 500 to 700 N/mm², a hardness ≤ 215 HB, and a density of 8.0 kg/dm³ (20°C). This material also has good polishability and forgeability.

Heat treatment and hot forming

Solution heat treatment (cooling by air or water): 1020-1120 °C

Hot forming (cooling by air): 1200-900 °C

Machinability
Stainless steel AISI 316 / 1.4401 has only medium machinability. As the material has a high carbon content, its machinability is comparatively poorer than that of 1.4404.

What is the difference between 1.4401 and 1.4404 stainless steel?

The difference between AISI 316 stainless steel (1.4401, X5CrNiMol17-12-2) and its counterpart 316L/1.4404 lies in its higher carbon content. This material is suitable for cold forming (cold block forming) but rarely used for cold heading. Typical industrial applications include the food industry, construction industry, and automotive industry.

What is the pressure rating for 1.4401 stainless steel?
The bright annealed 316 stainless steel material provides a tensile strength of 75,000 psi. With a burst pressure of 19,600 psi and a maximum working pressure of 3,267 psi, this tubing is designed to handle high-pressure systems.
