If you are looking for a cost-effective stainless steel sheet that offers good corrosion resistance, high heat tolerance, and magnetic properties, Grade 409 stainless steel is an excellent choice.
In 2025, the global demand for ferritic stainless steel sheets like 409 is increasing, especially in the automotive and energy sectors.
Due to rising costs of nickel, many manufacturers are turning to nickel-free 409 sheets to reduce production costs. 409 is now widely used in exhaust systems, catalytic converter housings, and industrial heat exchangers, where moderate corrosion resistance and strong magnetism are required.
At GNEE, 409 stainless steel sheet prices range between $2.10 – $2.80 per kg, depending on thickness, surface finish, and order quantity.
Is 409 Stainless Steel Magnetic?
Yes, 409 stainless steel sheet is magnetic.Type 409 belongs to the ferritic stainless steel family, which contains approximately 11–12% chromium and very little nickel. Because it has a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure, it exhibits strong magnetic properties - even after welding or heat treatment.
The magnetic behavior of 409 stainless steel makes it easy to identify and useful in industries where magnetic response is desired, such as automotive mufflers, catalytic converters, and heat shields.

Corrosion Resistance
Grade 409 stainless steel has excellent resistance to exhaust gas and atmospheric corrosion, superior to that of 410 martensitic grades with 12% chromium and 3CR12. However, the corrosion resistance is lower than that of grade 430 steels containing 17% chromium. The surface of grade 409 steel is liable to mild corrosion, which limits the usage of steel for decorative purposes.
Welding
Grade 409 steels must be pre-heated to temperatures of 150 to 260°C before welding. Although grade 430 and 409 filler rods or electrodes can be used during the welding of grade 409 steels, grade 309 electrodes or filler rods are strongly recommended by AS 1554.6. Care should be taken to weld grade 409 steels with minimum heat, to mitigate grain growth.
The difference between 409 stainless steel and 304
The corrosion resistance of 409 stainless steel is better than coated carbon steel, similar to that of Type 410 stainless steel, and less than that of Type 304/304L stainless steel. Type 409 is not suggested for cosmetic or surface-critical applications as light surface rusting can form during exposure to atmospheric conditions.
