310s stainless steel temperature limit

Apr 23, 2026

what is 310s stainless steel plate?

310S stainless steel plate is a high-temperature, low-carbon austenitic alloy (UNS S31008) containing 25% chromium and 20% nickel, specifically designed to provide exceptional oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 2100°F (1150°C). This low-carbon, low-sulfur formulation is commonly designated as 1.4845 / AISI 310S; compared to standard 310 stainless steel, it offers significantly improved weldability, reduced brittleness, and enhanced corrosion resistance in high-temperature sulfur-reducing atmospheres.

What Is the Temperature Limit of 310S Stainless Steel Plate?

The maximum continuous service temperature limit for 310 stainless steel plate (and its low-carbon variant, 310S) ranges from approximately 1040°C to 1150°C (1904°F to 2102°F), enabling it to perform exceptionally well in high-temperature furnace components and oxidation-resistant applications. Although this material is capable of withstanding peak temperatures reaching up to 2100°F (1150°C), instances of sustained, excessive thermal loading still require prudent management, taking into account the specific atmospheric conditions of the operating environment.

SS 310s plate temperature range

Continuous Service Temperature: Up to 1150°C (2100°F).
Intermittent Service Temperature: Up to 1035°C (1895°F).
Melting Range: 1400°C – 1450°C.
In oxidizing environments, it performs effectively up to 1050°C (1922°F); however, the maximum effective service temperature drops to approximately 900°C – 1000°C.

What is the temperature difference between 310 and 310S stainless steel?

Both 310 and 310S stainless steels are rated for similar high-temperature service up toroughly 1150°C (2100"F) in continuous service. The primary difference is that 310S (lowcarbon, < 0.03%) offers superior performance in corrosive or welded, high-heatenvironments, while 310 (standard carbon) provides slightly better creep strength atmaximum temperatures.

Applications of 310S Stainless Steel Plate

310S is primarily used for components exposed to high-temperature and corrosive environments:
Furnace Components: Conveyor belts, rollers, burners, radiant tubes, and structural supports.
Petrochemical Processing: Pipe hangers in refineries and steam boilers, and catalytic recovery systems.
Energy Production: Internal components of coal gasification furnaces and power generation equipment.
Heat Treatment Processes: Heat exchangers, muffle furnaces, distillation vessels, and annealing covers.
