304 vs. 304L vs. 304H: Corrosion Resistance

The basic corrosion resistance of 304, 304L, and 304H is essentially the same because they all have consistent chromium (18–20%) and nickel (8–10.5%) content, exhibiting good resistance to uniform corrosion in atmospheric environments, fresh water, and most weakly corrosive media.

 

The main difference lies in the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding: 304L, with a carbon content ≤0.03%, significantly reduces the probability of Cr₃₂₃C₆ carbides precipitating in the sensitization temperature range of 450–850°C, maintaining good corrosion resistance without post-weld solution treatment; while 304 (C ≤0.08%) and 304H (C 0.04–0.10%) show significantly higher intergranular corrosion susceptibility than 304L after welding or high-temperature exposure without appropriate heat treatment. According to ASTM A262 test results, 304L is more likely to pass the E or C method tests in the as-welded state.
