1.4021/X20Cr13 Stainless Steel Round Bar

Apr 13, 2026

GNEE is a professional manufacturer and exporter of 1.4021 (X20Cr13) martensitic stainless steel round bars. Our products fully comply with EN 10088-1, EN 10059, and ASTM A276 standards, ensuring stable supply to the global market with competitive prices and on-time delivery.

1.4021 stainless steel round bars feature precisely controlled chemical composition: C 0.16–0.25%, Cr 12.0–14.0%, and strictly limited impurity content (Si ≤ 1.0%, Mn ≤ 1.5%, P ≤ 0.04%, S ≤ 0.03%), ensuring excellent hardenability and corrosion resistance.

Our bars are primarily delivered in two conditions: annealed (+A) for excellent machinability, and quenched and tempered at 700°C (+QT700) for high strength. The tensile strength of 1.4021 QT700 bars ranges from 700–1000 MPa, with yield strength ≥ 500 MPa, elongation ≥ 8%, hardness controlled between 230–290 HBW, and impact energy ≥ 25J. These bars are widely used in valves, shafts, tool parts, and high-stress mechanical components.

We supply 1.4021 round bars with diameters ranging from 6mm to 300mm, and lengths from 2m to 6m. Custom cutting is also available according to customer requirements.

Each bar is subjected to 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) to eliminate internal defects, with dimensional tolerances controlled within ±0.1mm. The products are accompanied by EN 10204 3.1 factory inspection certificates.

Specific sulfur content ranges can improve specific properties. For products to be machined, it is recommended that the sulfur content be controlled within the range of 0.015% to 0.030%. For products requiring weldability, it is recommended that the sulfur content be controlled within the range of 0.008% to 0.030%. For bright products, the maximum permissible sulfur content is recommended to be 0.015%.

What is the typical hardness of a 1.4021 round bar?

Annealed (+A): Typically ≤230 HBW. In this state, the material is softest and easiest to machine.

Quenched and Tempered (QT): Depending on the tempering temperature, it is usually supplied in the form of QT700 (tensile strength 700–850 MPa) or QT800 (tensile strength 800–950 MPa).

Maximum Hardness: After quenching, the hardness can reach approximately 45–50 HRC, but the maximum hardness is rarely used to avoid brittleness.

Can 1.4021 round bars be welded?

Welding is difficult and generally not recommended.
Because it is a martensitic steel with high carbon, the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) becomes extremely hard and brittle, leading to cold cracking.
If welding is mandatory: You must preheat the material to 200°C–300°C and perform an immediate Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) / annealing to restore ductility.

What are common applications for 1.4021 round bars?

Shafts: Pump shafts and propeller shafts.

Accessories: Valve components, bolts, and nuts.

Tools: Mechanical engineering parts, kitchen utensils, and surgical instruments.

Energy: Turbine components and compressor components.

We maintain an inventory of over 500 tons, with diameters ranging from 10 mm to 500 mm. We can cut to your specific length and ship within 7 days.

Our 1.4021 round bars are supplied in a strictly controlled annealed condition or pre-hardened QT700/QT800 condition, saving you heat treatment costs and reducing tool wear. H9 and H10 centerless grinding surface finishes are also available to ensure perfect concentricity of high-speed shafts.

Inspection: 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) according to EN 10228-3 standard. Guaranteed free of internal cracks and voids.

End Protection: The ends of the round bars can be coated with anti-corrosion paint (usually distinguished by color according to the grade, such as 1.4021 often painted blue or yellow). For precision ends, plastic caps can be added.

Information includes: Material (1.4021/X20Cr13), Heat No., Size, Net Weight/Gross Weight (NW/GW), Delivery Condition (QT700/Annealed).

Dunnage (Timber Reinforcement): Timber is laid at the bottom of the container to prevent moisture corrosion caused by direct contact between the round bars and the metal floor. The timber is also used for support and fixation to prevent the container from swaying.
