Ti-45Nb Titanium Alloy Wire

Ti-45Nb titanium alloy was originally developed as an aerospace alloy because of its relative ease of forming, high strength and ductility at temperatures up to 801°F (427°C), making it ideal for rivets holding aluminum aircraft panels. This is especially true in areas with high engine exhaust temperatures.

The alloy has been used as a welded flange assembly for fixing the cavity of a high energy physics radio frequency linear gas pedal (made of high purity niobium) and has been drawn into superconducting wires. It is used as a medical device material for cochlear hearing implants, and its low modulus of elasticity makes the material a consideration for a variety of medical and dental devices.

Ti-45Nb titanium alloy is easily fabricated into structures and components. Although it is considered a refractory metal, processing techniques are the same as for other titanium alloys. Parts are typically welded using the GTAW process, but the addition of tail and backing shielding is required, and because of its simple metallurgy, post-weld heat treatment is not necessary. Machining requires the use of robust fixturing devices, low speed, high torque spine machines and sharp, high rake angle tools.
