What is the difference between ASTM A249 and A213?

ASTM A249 is a standard specification for welded austenitic steel boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger, and condenser tubes.

ASTM A213 is a standard specification for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger tubes.

ASTM A213 vs. ASTM A249 Heat Exchanger Tubes:Manufacturing Processes

The ASTM A213 standard focuses on seamless tubes:manufactured via extrusion or cold drawing processes that are suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature service conditions; conversely, the ASTM A249 standard focuses on welded tubes, produced through longitudinal welding processes and typically subjected to cold working-that are intended for general-purpose applications and offer superior wall thickness uniformity.

ASTM A213 vs ASTM A249 Heat Exchanger Tubes:Key Differences

Feature ASTM A213 ASTM A249
Tube Type Seamless (No Weld) Welded (ERW/Laser/TIG)
Primary Use High-pressure boilers, Superheaters Heat exchangers, Condensers

Wall Thickness Typically thicker options available Generally thinner, highly uniform
Surface Finish Hot-finished or Cold-finished Cold-worked and heat-treated
Testing Requirements Flaring, Flanging, Hardness, Hydrostatic Weld Decay Test, Flattening, Reverse Bend

Material&Grades

ASTM A249 and ASTM A213 Specifications indicate tube material is Austenitic Stainless Steel grades, which is wide used in stainless steel families, TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L, TP347, TP347H, TP321, TP321H, 904L grade is ideal material for various applications, they have some advantages that other steels do not have.

Dimensional Tolerance Comparison: ASTM A213 vs. ASTM A249

1. Outside Diameter (OD) Tolerances

OD tolerance is vital for ensuring the tube fits into the pre-drilled holes of the tubesheet.

Outside Diameter (inches) Outside Diameter (mm) OD Tolerance (inches) OD Tolerance (mm)
< 1.000 < 25.4 ± 0.004 ± 0.10
1.000 to 1.500 25.4 to 38.1 ± 0.006 ± 0.15
> 1.500 to < 2.000 > 38.1 to < 50.8 ± 0.008 ± 0.20
2.000 to < 2.500 50.8 to < 63.5 ± 0.010 ± 0.25
2.500 to < 3.000 63.5 to < 76.2 ± 0.012 ± 0.30

Note: These tolerances apply to both A213 and A249 per ASTM A1016 general requirements.

2. Wall Thickness (WT) Tolerances

This is where the two standards differ significantly in practice. ASTM A249 (Welded) tubes generally offer superior wall thickness uniformity compared to ASTM A213 (Seamless).

Standard Tube Type Wall Thickness (WT) Tolerance Technical Reason
ASTM A213 Seamless (Cold Finished) ± 10% or ± 12.5% (Depending on size) Produced by piercing a solid billet; concentricity is harder to control.
ASTM A213 Seamless (Hot Finished) + 40% / - 0% (Varies by OD/WT ratio) High-temperature extrusion leads to wider variations.
ASTM A249 Welded (Cold Rolled) ± 10% Produced from precision-rolled steel strip, ensuring high concentricity.

3. Cut Length Tolerances

Applies to tubes ordered in specific cut lengths (not random lengths).

Outside Diameter (inches) Length (feet) Over Tolerance (inches) Under Tolerance (inches)
All Sizes < 24 ft + 1/8 in (3mm) - 0
All Sizes 24 ft to 34 ft + 1/4 in (6mm) - 0
All Sizes > 34 ft + 1/8 in for every 10 ft - 0

ASTM A213 vs ASTM A249 Heat Exchanger Tubes:Application

ASTM A213 (seamless) and ASTM A249 (welded) are key standards for austenitic stainless steel heat exchanger tubes, primarily differing in manufacturing method and pressure rating. A213 is designed for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical applications, while A249 is often utilized for general service, condensers, and cost-sensitive applications.

What is the difference between ASTM A269 and A249?

ASTM A249 requires the weld to be cold-worked after welding, and before final heat treatment. ASTM A269 does not require any cold-working or weld bead control. ASTM A270 does not require weld bead. ASTM A554 can be supplied with the weld bead left on, and hence it complies with the "Bead Removed" option of A554.
