What is en 1.4401 material?
EN 1.4401 grade 316 stainless steel (16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum) is the second most important austenitic Stainless Steel compared to 304. 316 added molybdenum and higher nickel content gives it greater corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments compared to 304.

 

What is 1.4016 material?
1.4016 material, also known as AISI 430 and X6Cr17, is a ferritic stainless steel known for its good corrosion resistance, formability, and ductility. It is an iron-based alloy with a high chromium content, making it suitable for applications like domestic appliances, cutlery, kitchen equipment, flue linings, and some chemical industry uses.

Corrosion Resistance
1.4016 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel with a chromium content of 16.00%-18.00%. It forms a dense oxide film on the steel surface, offering excellent corrosion resistance in normal atmospheric environments, fresh water, steam, and various organic and inorganic compounds, particularly against nitric acid. However, its corrosion resistance is relatively weaker than that of 1.4401 stainless steel.

 

Hardness
1.4016 stainless steel has a tensile strength of 450-600 MPa. 1.4401 stainless steel has a tensile strength of ≥515 MPa and a hardness of ≤201 HB. Overall, the hardness difference between the two is not significant, but 1.4016 stainless steel has a higher upper strength range.

 

Weldability
1.4016 stainless steel can be welded using common welding methods, and its welded properties are stable. 1.4401 stainless steel also has good weldability. Common welding methods include argon arc welding, resistance welding, and laser welding. However, due to its high thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient, care must be taken to control the temperature and avoid overheating during welding.

 

Is 430 stainless steel good quality?
Yes, 430 stainless steel is a good choice for applications requiring a balance of affordability, good formability, and moderate corrosion resistance, especially in indoor environments and non-corrosive conditions. It is less expensive than higher grades like 304 and is known for its aesthetics and excellent polishability. However, its limited resistance to harsh, corrosive environments and high temperatures makes it less suitable for demanding applications where strength and longevity are crucial.
