differences between 1.4112 and 1.4125 stainless steel

Dec 17, 2025

What material is 1.4112 ?

Material 1.4112 is a martensitic stainless steel also known as X90CrMoV18 or AISI 440B, characterized by its high carbon and chromium content, which provides excellent hardness, wear resistance, and good corrosion resistance. This hardenable steel is often used for demanding applications like knife blades, surgical instruments, and toolmaking due to its ability to achieve high hardness (up to 60 HRC) and maintain sharp edges.

What material is 1.4125 equivalent to?

440C stainless steel is a martensitic stainless steel grade which can be heat threated up to 57 - 60 HRC. This grade is written as 1.4125 or X105CrMo17 according to EN norm and UNS S44004 according to UNS norm.

What is 1.4123 stainless steel equivalent to?
Grade 1.4123 (AISI 420 MOD), an alternative to CRONIDUR 30®, is a very high hardness martensitic stainless steel with good abrasion resistance and a corrosion resistance far superior to that of the 17% Cr to 1% C range (type 440C).

1.4112 vs. 1.4125 stainless steel: Corrosion resistance

1.4112 (AISI 440B) has better corrosion resistance than 1.4125 (AISI 440C) because it has a slightly lower carbon content and typically contains more vanadium/molybdenum, which improves its properties. However, 1.4125 has higher hardness and wear resistance. Both are martensitic stainless steels. 1.4112 has some acid resistance and is more suitable for general applications where corrosion is a concern, while 1.4125 is more suitable for high-wear cutting applications.

1.4112 and 1.4125 stainless steel: Hardness

Both 1.4112 (440B) and 1.4125 (440C) are high-carbon martensitic stainless steels known for excellent hardness, but 1.4125 (440C) achieves higher hardness (up to ~60 HRC) due to its higher carbon content compared to 1.4112 (440B) (up to ~57 HRC).

1.4112 and 1.4125 stainless steel: Weldability

Both 1.4112 (440B) and 1.4125 (440C) are high-carbon martensitic stainless steels with poor inherent weldability due to their tendency to air harden, forming brittle martensite and risking cracking; however, welding is possible with strict preheating (around 260°C/500°F) and extensive post-weld heat treatment (annealing at 732-760°C/1350-1400°F for several hours, followed by slow furnace cooling) to prevent cracking and restore properties, though it's generally avoided in favor of alternative fabrication methods.

Can 440C stainless steel rust easily?
Reasonable hardness: 440C steel, when properly treated, can achieve a reasonable hardness, making it suitable for general kitchen use. Good rust resistance: 440C has good corrosion resistance.
