What is the A270 material specification?
ASTM A270 covers seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic and ferritic/austenitic stainless steel sanitary pipe. Seamless pipe shall be produced without welding at any stage. Welded pipe shall be welded using an automatic process without the addition of any filler metal. Heavy cold-worked pipe shall be produced by cold working the welded pipe prior to final annealing to a minimum of 35% reduction in wall and weld thickness. No filler material shall be used during welding. All material shall be supplied in the heat-treated condition.
A270 Type 304 stainless steel tubing is typically produced in both seamless and welded forms. A270 Type 304 seamless sanitary stainless steel tubing is manufactured using an extrusion process, where a hot steel billet is extruded through a die to achieve precise dimensions. Because there are no welds, these tubes offer higher strength and load-bearing capacity than ASTM A270 TP304 welded sanitary stainless steel tubing. However, welded tubing is less expensive than seamless tubing and can be manufactured in a wider range of sizes, which is not possible with seamless tubing. What is the surface finish of ASTM A270?
Surface finish is 20 µ-in Ra (0.5 µm) ID maximum, 30 µ-in Ra (0.8 µm) OD maximum surface roughness measured per ASME/ANSI B46. 1 with the profilometer reading at 90 degrees to the lay.
